Thought Before Boarding a Plane

Thoughts Before Boarding a Plane

I’m beginning to forget.
I’m beginning to forget and it makes me sort of sad,
though I know it’s normal.
It’s life.

Our brains only have so much space
to hold all the moments.
But the words you mispronounced,
and the superhero underwear,
and the early morning quiet play moments,
before the world woke…

See,
our brains only have so much space
to hold all the moments,
and we don’t get to choose what it Velcros,
and what it shuffles off to the dust heap of thought
(only to be resurrected unevenly and unexpectedly
by a smell or a song or that bear in the corner of the closet
that we couldn’t toss quite yet).

And so I just wanted to name,
before I forget,
how much I want to remember.

Our brains only have so much space,
and I’d rather it be of that wonder,
if given the choice.

But we’re not,
and that’s normal.
It’s life.

But I’d rather, if it’s all the same to you,
remember.

The Oak

For the ancient Celts, June was the month where they honored the mighty oak tree. In June this towering tree reaches its zenith in beauty, and was a reminder for the Celts that doing two things at once in this life is necessary: we must plant deep roots while also reaching for the highest heights.

Their ancient priests, Druids, were colloquially known as “oak knowers,” believing that of all of the trees, the oak tree was the wisest. The Celtic word for oak was Duir (again, also where they got the word Druid), which meant “endure” and “truth.”

The oak tree, brightened by the Oak Moon, was both strong and enduring, like truth.

June is a month to deepen your roots and reach for those heights.
